Ramaswami Venkataraman was an Indian lawyer, freedom fighter politician, and ninth president of the country. Before he became President, he also served as Vice President of India for about four years. Following his studies in law and practiced law in his native Madras High Court and the Supreme Court and was also involved in the Indian Independence movement in his teenage years. He was a part of the movement ‘Quit India’ and was also elected an official Member of the Constituent Assembly.
The election to Lok Sabha four times and was the Minister for Finance and Defense in the Union Government. He was also Minister of State within the Central Government. On the international scale as well, he’s the president and member of several important organizations which include that of the United Nations.

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was born four December 1910, in the village of Rajamadam close to Pattukottai in the Tanjore district, Tamil Nadu. He received his education in Madras and completed his Master’s in Economics at Loyola College, Madras. Following that, he earned a law diploma through Madras Law College. He began his practice before Madras High Court. Madras High Court and then in 1951, he began practicing law through the registration of his identity on the Supreme Court.
During his time in law school as a lawyer, he joined the movement for freedom. He was part of the “Quit India” movement which was among the most significant protests that were organized by the Indian National Congress against British rule. He was arrested and sent to prison in 1942. However, his interest in law was never lost. In 1946, as it was nearly finalized, he was placed in a team of lawyers to defend Indian citizens before the court that were in Malaya as well as Singapore. They believed that they were supporting Japan.
The Secretary was the Madras Provincial Bar Federation from 1947 until 1950.

Life in politics
R. Venkataramana’s involvement in the political scene was also growing. He was elected to be an elected participant in the Constituent Assembly which framed the Constitution of India. In 1950 the year he was elected to the Permanent Parliament of independent India (1950-52). Following this, he was elected to India’s first legislature (1952-1957). In the period between 1952 and 1957, it was his turn to be a part of the Indian Parliamentary delegation to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in New Zealand. He also served as the secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party from 1953-54.
After being elected to Parliament in the year 1957 however, he quit as a minister in Madras state. He was a minister in several ministries within Madras State from 1957 to 1967. He was also the head of the state’s top house “The Madras Legislative Council”.
Venkataraman was appointed an official Member of the Planning Commission in 1967. He was charged with the responsibility for Industry, Labour, Energy, Transportation, Transport, and Railways. He remained in that position until the year 1971. Then, in the year 1977 again was appointed to the Lok Sabha from Madras (South) and was appointed Chair of the Public Accounts Committee.
He is also an active part of both the Political Affairs Committee and Economic Affairs Committee of the Federal Cabinet. In addition to his other duties, he served as Director for the International Monetary Fund, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development as well as the Asian Development Bank.

Venkataraman represented India at The United Nations General Assembly in 1953 1954, 1955, 1956 1959, 1960, and 1961. The year 1958 was the time he headed India’s Indian contingent to attend the 42nd session at the International Labor Conference in Geneva. In 1978, he was the representative of India at the Inter-Parliamentary Conference held in Vienna. From 1955 until the year 1979, Venkataraman served as a judge of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal and the president of the tribunal from 1968 to 1979.
In the year 1980 Venkataraman returned to Lok Sabha and served as Finance Minister in the cabinet of Indira Gandhi. In the following year, he was elected to the position of Defense Minister in India. As Defense Minister, the Indian government took its program to develop missiles to the next level. The missiles are A.P.J. Abdul Kalam from the space program to the missile program. Then he was Vice-President of India and was elected the President of India in 1987. The President worked alongside four prime ministers over his five-year term.
Awards and Honors
R. Venkataraman has been awarded numerous honors and awards. Madras, Burdwan, and Nagarjuna Universities conferred him with a Doctorate in Law’ (Honorary). Madras Medical College honored him with the title of Honorary Fellow and Roorkee University awarded him a Doctorate in Social Sciences. As a result of his participation in the Indian freedom struggle, He has presented with the Soviet Land Prize for ‘Ragi Patra’ as well as his travelogue about K. Kamaraju’s trip to socialist nations. He was presented with an award from the Secretary-General of the United Nations for his services to the United Nations Administrative Tribunal. Shankaracharya from Kanchipuram was honored with “Sat Seva Ratna’.
Death
On the 12th of January, 2009 the patient had been admitted to the Army Hospital in New Delhi. The condition deteriorated day by day until his departure on 27 January 2009.
